The Definitions of a Sound Recordist // /

The sound recordist or location sound recordist or production sound recordist descriptor or title was originally derived in England or somewhere in Europe similar to the American term a production location sound mixer or production sound engineer (among other synonyms). They are all the same counterpart. The film sound recordists roles are similar to the counterpart in video production or television broadcast for smaller scale productions, but the film sound recordist may have a larger sound crew with supporting personnel for motion picture films of feature or agency scale.

Film Audio Production

The sound recordist in film production records all sound/audio from microphones; typically lavalier microphones (aka wireless or radio mics) and shotgun microphones. Often on larger scale film productions the sound recordist is the chief audio person with the most experience. There is also a boom operator and utility audio technician or audio / sound technician or assistant often on larger film productions that assist the sound recordist. The boom operator(s) often are a critical element to gather clean sound with directional shotgun microphones as a microphone off of a person does not create intrusive rustling sounds that lavaliers can when not hidden properly. The lavaliers are hidden successfully with a number of techniques by the sound department; however, sometime there are problems by clothing that arise on occasion, and that's why having a boom off the person is needed. The utility audio/sound person assists with a number of production tasks to the sound recordist / often called the audio engineer.

Video Production and the role of the Sound Recordist

In the early days of video production the ENG or EFP video crew often had to record sound to a VTR apart from the camera or the sound recordist carried the VTR along the camera person. Often the camera was feeding the video signal with separate audio sources to the VTR. Thankfully those bad old days of video have passed and cameras since 1980's have built in sound recording. Modern day cameras have internal recording for the most part (excepting specialty cameras). Modern day video cameras take a number of audio input sources, most desirable being XLR, then other connectors such as female mini. Some modern cameras such as DSLR have more desired to have the sound recorded externally to a portable digital recorder. We'll focus on the sound recordist role in modern video production technology as opposed to the history.

Why You Need the Sound Recordist for Video?

Why are professional sound recordists desirable or needed in video production? Often multiple people on camera require a sound recordist to mix several sources together from shotgun microphones or lavaliers or other audio sources where one camera person cannot do while concentrating on their work. Often a director of photography or camera person will need to focus on shooting and other critical direction, aside from worrying about sound mixing and recording, so a sound recordist is the key to creativity.

Simple limitations of cameras will also require a sound person to step in to save the mix as well. Modern DSLR cameras have very limited audio recording where a shotgun mic input won't cut the mustard for clean direct sound, so a sound recordist is there for you to help. Sound recordists are relied on for every type of video and television production as well. Time code sync recoding married to audio files from multiple cameras also requires a experienced sound recordist along with the right audio equipment. Experienced sound recordists are always, more often than not used for professional film production, and have been used in television and non broadcast video for decades - so consider what's important, less cost or the best sound?
