| Overview
- Nick - I'm a
native of Denver Colorado and I have helped many people
with location sound throughout the city and the state.
Denver is Colorado's capital city and largest population
equaling Colorado Springs. The Denver metro area comprises
Aurora, Lakewood, Thornton, Northglenn, Littleton, Englewood,
Lone Tree, Westminster, Federal Heights, Arvada, Broomfield,
Wheat Ridge, Parker, Commerce City, Centennial, Lone
Tree, Highlands Ranch, Ken Caryl, Green Mountain, Parker
and Golden - I know these cities well too.
What
are the tasks of a production sound person AKA a sound
recordist?
The
sound mixer / recordist (will be referred to as a sound
person below) is responsible for mixing audio from lavaliers,
stick microphones, shotgun microphones, lavaliers typically
into a ENG or EFP mixer (sometimes a mixer/recorder
combination) then passing the audio to a camera or external
recorder. The ENG or EFP mixer is a portable mixer with
2 channels or more.
Why
Hire a Sound Person / Expert instead of 'do it yourself?'
With
cameras minus good audio recording ability, such as
most DSLR or 35mm film cameras the sound person is the
needed person to capture problem free, clean sound that
is the half the picture in lingo terms. Large film productions
in particular or many productions don't have the time
/ logistics needed to repeat all the resources, especially
for feature film production; you can't just bring the
entire cast & crew back + arrange all the elements.
In the past and present ADR is a technique to clean
up audio on location with problems, basically re-recording
dialogue from actors - however - as your sound person,
I'll be sure this does not happen when I'm on your set.
There are other limitations of a smaller crew or single
camera person - such as time needed to move from scene
to scene, setup to setup, place to place or how many
subjects are on camera at a time. A good sound person
is the way to go to speed your production along on location,
and a good sound person is expert at remote audio, just
what you need as a camera person to ease up your time
and concentrate on your shooting - a sound decision.
Any multiple subject production requires a sound man
where multiple dialogues occur or other common challenges
to a pair of lavaliers. Having a sound person mix lavaliers
and work a boom also increases your production value
and often is the only way to take suitable footage after
the shoot.
The
synonyms in Denver and abroad are a audio tech
or audio technician most frequently or the production
or location sound mixer or recordist, but these are
terms below as well used across the planet for crews,
networks and producers using audio personnel -

Sometimes a sound person - AKA sound mixer or recordist
is referred to
as a Boom Operator - however a boom operator in larger
film production typically exclusively operated a boom
AKA shotgun mic, while the sound mixer or recordist
monitors the boom and often lavaliers in tandem for
the sound recording
-
Sometimes a Sound Tech or Sound Technician or Audio
or Sound Engineer are all used in tandem, but the most
common term now is production or location sound mixer
/ recordist.
